Between Tides - The Lighting of Names

In liminal waters, a figure emerges adorned in traditional headwrap and patterned textiles, surrounded by floating ceremonial lanterns. This work explores the ritual practice of ancestor veneration found in both African and Celtic spiritual traditions—the lighting of flames to call forth names, to remember, to honor. "Between Tides" references the threshold space where saltwater meets fresh, where island Celtic cultures and African coastal peoples both developed deep relationships with water as transformative element. The lanterns drift upward like prayers, like breath, like the continuity of memory across diaspora. Water here is not merely backdrop but active participant: it purifies, it births, it carries the light forward.
